PIONIC 2p LEVEL WIDTHS IN LIGHT NUCLEI

چکیده
This paper provides an extension of previous work [l] on the pionic 2p-1s yields for nuclei flom N to Na in two directions. We report here on measurements of the 2p-1s yields for the lighter nuclei Be, FOB, natB and C, and from these data we deduce the natural 2p level widths r(2p) due to pion absorption by comparison with the 2p-1s X-ray transition rate WX. In ref. 1, WX was calculated on a purely electromagnetic basis. Now we take into account the effect of the strong r-nucleus interaction on Wx. We give here also the correspondingly modified values for the nuclei dealt with in ref. 1. The measurements were performed at the CERN 600 MeV Synchrocyclotron using a scintillation counter telescope with coincidence counters-l, 2.3 in front of the target and a veto counter 4 behind the target [2]. The majority of the spectra were measured with a windowless Ge detector of volume 0.8 cm2 X x 1.0 cm. Its energy resolution was 0.8 keV at 70 keV. The Be and natB targets were of cylindrical shape with a diameter of 9 cm and a thickness of 2 g,‘cm2. The IOB powder was contained in a rectangular box (8 X 6 cm2) with a thickness of 0.6 g/cm2. of 5.4 g/cm2. The C target was a graphite sheet

Systematic calculation of s - wave pion and kaon self - energies in asymmetric nuclear matter
We calculate the pion self-energies in asymmetric nuclear matter in the two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. We find three types of corrections beyond the well-known linear density approximation. The resulting s-wave potential (or equivalent mass-shift) of a π − in the center of a heavy nucleus like Pb turns out to be U π − = ∆m π − ≃ 14 MeV, about half of what is needed to for...

We study the (γ, p) reaction on 208Pb leading to 207Pb with a bound pion attached to it in the lowest 1s or 2p pionic levels. The reaction can be made recoilless to optimize the production cross section but we must choose a bit higher photon energy to overcome the Coulomb barrier in the proton emission. The cross sections obtained are easily measurable and can be larger than 50 per cent of the ...

The reaction can be made recoilless which optimizes the production cross section. متن کاملChiral dynamics of deeply bound pionic atoms.
We present and discuss a systematic calculation, based on two-loop chiral perturbation theory, of the pion-nuclear s-wave optical potential. A proper treatment of the explicit energy dependence of the off-shell pion self-energy together with (electromagnetic) gauge invariance of the Klein-Gordon equation turns out to be crucial. Accurate data for the binding energies and widths of the 1s and 2p...

The binding energies of the deeply bound 1s and 2p states in pionic atoms of 207 Pb, recently established experimentally in the 208 Pb(d, 3 He) reaction, have been used by several groups to derive the pion effective mass in nuclear matter. We show that these binding energies are fully consistent with 'normal' pionic atoms and that the real part of the pion-nucleus potential at the center of 207...
